The end of Week 5 has already come! We had a 3-day weekend, as Monday was another Brazilian holiday. My weekend was fairly relaxing. On Friday night, all of the volunteers and I went out to dinner in Rio Vermelho. We had new volunteers who came from 1-2 weeks (mostly one week) and it was already their last night. It went by so fast, and I wish they could have stayed longer!!
On Saturday, it was raining, so I took it easy for most of the day. On Sunday, the weather was gorgeous and sunny again, so we all went to Itapua beach which is roughly 30 minutes away by car or bus. We wanted to take the bus, but apparently it is really difficult to hail a bus here. The bus we wanted just drove right past the bus stop every time- you'd probably have to jump in front of it to get it to stop. We got impatient, so we haggled a taxi driver until he agreed to drive us there for $45 Reales... it wasn't $2.25 like the bus, but it wasn't horrible considering it was split between four people and a half hour drive away. Itapua beach is really pretty and has a different feel from Porto de Barra, the beach near our home. Barra gets very, very crowded and has a neverending flow of vendors who will try to sell you a beaded necklace even if it means waking you up from a nap. At Itapua, there is a little bit less of that going on and a little more laid back. However, the ocean wasn't looking the cleanest, so I didn't go in past my ankles. It probably wasn't really dirty, it was just really shallow where we were, so it looked brown from the sand- either way, not very inviting. On Monday, I went back to Porto de Barra for a few hours in the afternoon. It was a nice relaxing weekend and I got a good amount of reading done. It felt weird to go back to work bright and early on Tuesday morning!
This little boy was sitting next to us at Itapua beach.. I think that this might be one of the best pictures taken so far!
Itapua beach- the clouds looked perfect! :-)
